CS2 GLOSSARY

Storage Unit

A purchasable in-game container that holds up to 1000 items, letting you store far beyond the 1000-item base inventory limit.

Sooner or later every collector hits the same wall: the CS2 inventory caps at 1000 items, and a serious case hoard or sticker stash blows past it fast. The Storage Unit is Valve's built-in answer — a purchasable container that swallows up to 1000 items each and keeps them safely on your own account.

What it is and how it behaves

A Storage Unit is an in-game container you buy and fill, holding up to 1000 items well beyond the 1000-item base inventory limit. Units can be named and searched, so you can label one 'Cases' and another 'Investments' and find anything without scrolling your whole inventory.

The key thing to understand is that storing is not trading. Items placed inside stay on your account the entire time, which has two useful consequences:

  • No trade lock. Moving an item into or out of storage does not start the 7-day trade lock, because ownership never changes.
  • StatTrak survives. Storing does not reset StatTrak kill counters.
  • Massive capacity. Each unit holds up to 1000 items on top of your base inventory.
  • Named and searchable. Label units by purpose and search across them.
  • Fully reversible. Retrieve items back to your inventory whenever you need them.

The one real catch

Stored items are invisible to the outside world. As long as something sits in a unit, it cannot be seen by incoming trade offers and does not appear in marketplace listing tools — you have to physically retrieve it to your inventory first. That extra step trips up sellers who forget where an item lives.

So plan retrieval ahead. If you intend to sell from deep storage, pull the items out before you start listing, and remember that a freshly retrieved item is immediately listable — storage itself adds no lock or delay of its own.

Using storage as organization

For large inventories, units are as much an organization tool as a capacity one. Keeping investments — case hoards, sealed sticker capsules — separated from your daily loadout makes audits and sales far less error-prone, because you are never one misclick away from selling a long-term hold.

This matters more as a portfolio grows. Traders tracking the broader market against the CS2 market cap often park their long-term positions in dedicated units and keep only active, tradable items loose in the main inventory.

FAQ

How many items can a CS2 Storage Unit hold?

Up to 1000 items per unit, which sits on top of the 1000-item base inventory limit. You can buy multiple units and name each one, so total storage scales well beyond a single inventory.

Does putting items in a Storage Unit cause a trade lock?

No. Storing is not trading, so moving items into or out of a unit does not trigger a trade lock and does not reset StatTrak counters. The items stay on your own account the whole time.

Can you sell or trade items directly from a Storage Unit?

Not directly. Stored items are invisible to trade offers and marketplace listing tools until you retrieve them to your main inventory. Plan the retrieval ahead of time when you are selling from deep storage.
