Full buy when the whole team can afford rifles, armor and the utility its plan needs; eco or half buy when it cannot, so the next round becomes a full buy. Read everyone's money and surviving weapons before anyone clicks. “I can afford an AK” is incomplete if the entry has no armor, support cannot flash and two teammates are saving.
What are you buying this round for?
| Call | Purpose | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Full buy | Complete plan with rifles or AWP, armor and the needed utility | Can everyone play their role, including CT defuse coverage? |
| Half buy | Limited equipment that keeps next round's buy | What is each player's spending cap? |
| Eco | Minimal spending to rebuild | Can a coordinated cheap round earn damage, a plant or a recovered rifle? |
| Force | This round matters more than the next | Why is it worth it, and how will cheaper weapons win it? |
A saved rifle and armor can give a player a full role for little new money. When losing the round ends the match, saving has no future value; say so before teammates save out of habit.

Use the buy menu's guaranteed figure
Since the 25 April 2024 update, the top right of the buy menu shows the minimum money you are guaranteed to have next round. The same update added a Dropped Weapons panel that lists weapons teammates dropped in the buy zone and lets you pick them up directly.
Spending cap = guaranteed next-round money − cost of next round's target buy. Do not count a kill, plant or win that has not happened.
Example: the menu shows $5,100 guaranteed and the buy you want next round costs $4,300. Your cap now is $5,100 − $4,300 = $800. Spend $700 and you keep a $100 margin; spend $1,200 and you are $400 short. A negative cap means even buying nothing will not fund the target without a drop.
Work it out per player: “everyone spend up to $800” can break a poorer teammate's buy. Ask for drops early, before teammates buy substitutes.
One win does not erase the loss bonus
The “a win resets the loss bonus” shortcut is out of date. Valve's 13 March 2019 update replaced the reset with a loss counter: each loss adds one, each win removes one. A 14 May 2019 change made a team on the maximum $3,400 bonus drop to $2,900 after a win. Both date from CS:GO; in CS2 the buy menu tells you the minimum you will have next round, so read that number instead of rebuilding the ladder.
CS2 changes to team awards
- Since 16 July 2025, in Competitive modes CTs receive a $50 team award for each Terrorist eliminated in the round, win or lose (Valve notes). Trading kills in a lost round still pays.
- Since 23 May 2024, Terrorists get a $600 team award, down from $800, when they plant and the bomb is defused (Valve notes).
Enemy equipment is never fully known. Saved rifles, picked-up weapons and banked money make “they lost, so they have pistols” unreliable. Combine recent rounds with the weapons you have seen, and keep your anti-eco setup safe against one surprise rifle.
Five purchases, one freeze-time plan
- Read all five money values and surviving weapons.
- Call the buy and the route: “light buy, close B trade” says more than “force.”
- Arrange drops through the Dropped Weapons panel before teammates buy substitutes.
- Reserve grenades for entry, delay or escape. On CT, assign defuse coverage.
- Check that an AWP purchase leaves the team enough for support utility.
Saving depends on the objective
A retake with little time, no kit and no useful utility can be worth less than the rifles you keep for next round. At a deciding score, or with a real trade route through the site, the same save can be wrong. Say where you will save so the team makes one decision.
In review, check a buy and the next freeze time. Did the half buy reach its target? Did the saved AWP enable a coherent round? Pair this with utility planning and the AWP role guide.
